ChatGPT looks nothing like it did two years ago. If you last opened it to ask a quick question and closed the tab, here’s what you missed and what’s worth your time now.
ChatGPT split into two models this year, custom instructions tripled in size, and Canvas disappeared into the chat window itself. Memory now follows you across sessions instead of resetting every time. If you cancelled your subscription a while back, most of what made you leave is gone.

Two models, one decision
OpenAI split ChatGPT into two models this year. Free and Go users run Luna: unlimited text chats, no message caps, solid for everyday writing. Plus and Pro users run Sol: tuned for reliability on harder questions, with a slider that lets you choose how much reasoning it applies before answering.
If you avoided the free version because it used to stall you mid-task, that limitation is gone.
Memory got a real upgrade
ChatGPT can now hold context across your conversations, your uploaded files, and connected apps like Gmail, so you’re not re-explaining yourself every session. You control what it remembers. You can view it, edit it, or delete it in Settings, under Personalization.
Worth a habit: check that memory panel every so often. Know what it’s holding onto.
Custom instructions just got more room
Custom instructions used to cap out at 1,500 characters. As of July 15, 2026, that’s 5,000.
That’s enough space to actually explain your business. Your audience. Your tone. What you never want it to say. Set it once, and every new chat starts already knowing who you are instead of you re-explaining yourself for the tenth time this week.
Projects keep client work from bleeding together
If you’re juggling more than one client or more than one offer, Projects solve a real problem. Each one holds its own files, its own instructions, its own memory. What ChatGPT remembers about Client A never shows up in a chat about Client B.
It’s the closest ChatGPT gets to the folder structure your brain already wants.
Tasks: the feature worth your attention
Tasks lets you schedule a one-time or recurring prompt and get notified by push or email when it’s done. A Monday industry recap. A weekly competitor check. A recurring brainstorm prompt that runs before you even open your laptop.
It’s not the same as the automation I build for clients inside Google Workspace. It’s the closest ChatGPT gets to acting like a standing assistant instead of a chat window you have to remember to open.
Canvas is gone. Writing lives in the chat now.
The separate Canvas window has been folded into the main interface. Writing and code now appear as editable blocks directly in the response. One less window to manage.
Image generation moved
The standalone DALL-E GPT is being retired. Image generation now lives inside ChatGPT Images, built into the main chat. If you had saved images through the old GPT, download them before it’s gone.
What got cut
Sora, OpenAI’s video tool, never made it into ChatGPT the way many people hoped it would. The standalone app has already shut down. If a workflow of yours depended on it, that workflow needs a new home.
Quick win
Two years is a long time in this world. If you left ChatGPT because it couldn’t hold a thought past one message, that version doesn’t exist anymore. Whether it earns a second look is still your call. Just make it an informed one.
